The Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at this $5 billion pharmaceutical firm brought in The Evanston Group to help build out and implement Clarity PPM for the global R&D organization. The CSO was seeking greater visibility into the overall R&D portfolio in order to do better portfolio planning. When we engaged with the client, the PPM rollout was in a state of disarray. The previous team had tried to jam a system in without aligning the processes and the people, and it was an utter failure.

Our first step was to bring in a program leader and technical experts to dig in to the client’s as-is and to-be processes and document them in a PMO playbook. Then we were able to determine the specific project team we’d need in order to roll out Clarity PPM and get to the to-be state. We took ownership to ensure that the project was staffed with the right people – we brought in the overall program manager plus a couple of Clarity architects, business analysts, and communications specialists. We partnered with the internal business and IT teams to ensure the PPM tool was rolled out in line with the business expectations.

Over the course of a two-year period, The Evanston Group helped to build out the client’s stage-gated processes, roll out a project portfolio management tool, and develop analytics capabilities.

For this $10 billion medical device firm, we provided a PMO leader and team of experts to consult on PMO processes around project portfolio management and stage-gated new product development. We helped the client rollout Microsoft Project Server and Enterprise Project Management (EPM) and develop financial analytics and portfolio analytics capabilities. And we helped them build their stage-gated R&D processes after a series of acquisitions and divestitures.Tactically, we helped the client to then use those tools and systems to optimally execute their portfolio planning.
